AIMS AND CONTENT

At the end of the course the student will have to know the theoretical bases for, physiological  labor and childbirth assistance Original

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will be able to:

  • Describe and identify the theoretical foundations for the care of physiological labor and delivery.

  • Differentiate between physiological labor and delivery in the context of low-risk obstetrics.

  • Recognize vaginal and perineal tears and understand the basic principles of suturing tears up to the second degree.

  • Identify and describe optimal care during the third stage of labor, postpartum care, and initiation of breastfeeding.

TEACHING METHODS

The following methods will be applied: lectures, discussion of clinical cases, critical evaluation of evidences and guidelines

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

• Cervical dilatation curves;
• Stages of labor and birth;
• Engagement, progression, and expulsion of fetus and placenta;
• Physiological third stage;
• Labor and delivery in water;
• Episiotomy and episiorrhaphy;
• Obstetric lacerations and sutures

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will allow to verify the knowledge of the physiological modalities of assistance in labor and delivery through questions related to the various topics covered. The following objectives will be evaluated: knowledge of theoretical bases of physiological labur and delivery, literature and guidelines, use of correct terminology
