AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Know the role and significance of cultural factors in the genesis and manifestation of mental illnesses and their participation in the development of therapeutic processes. Acquire specific rehabilitation skills for functional prevention and recovery in multiethnic contexts, taking into account cultural differences and personal and collective history in using methodologies, acquiring techniques and appropriate relational approaches. Obtain general notions about the phenomenology of aging in its individual and social aspects and on the main characteristics of the elderly. Acquire knowledge and skills on specific individual and / or group rehabilitative planning capabilities and operational abilities in different contexts related to the effects of psycho-geriatric disorder on the individual, family and society.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with notions on the link between the etiological significance of diseases (and consequent care systems) with the cultural values present in a given society.
At the end of the course the student will be able to.
- define the concept and importance of culture in the psychiatric field;
- recognize the presence of care systems other than those of official medicine;
- explain the meaning of traditional health care systems;
- compare different systems of thought;
- critically evaluate forms of explanation based on prejudice;
- to recognize general foundations of the functioning of the SNC.Knowledge of the nosographic classification of mental illnesses.Competence in the semiotics of disorders of thought and intelligence.the complexity of the integration process

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures with presentation of clinical cases.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Definition, meaning and patoplastic effect of culture. Several etiological explanations of the diseases. Comparisons between different forms of thought. Demonstration of the presence in Western culture of traditional treatments. Evolution of Western thought. Cultural modification of the concept of mental illness. Individualistic psychology compared with collectivist psychology. Culturally determined syndromes. Anorexia seen as culturally determined disease. Psychological resuscitation of the immigration and integration process.

Power point material will also be provided to further integrate the contents of the textbook and lessons.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is carried out orally. The exam is graded out of thirty and passing the exam is subject to obtaining a score of at least 18/30. Weighted average with the other modules of the integrated teaching/course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam is developed with the aim of evaluating the learning of basic knowledge relating to the psychopathology of the ethnopsychiatry.

The exam will have the objective of ascertaining that the expected learning outcomes have been achieved through a critical evaluation of the knowledge acquired as well as through the candidate's ability to formulate possible solutions relating to ethnopsychiatry.

Students with LSD or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the professor on the written or oral mode of the examination, by contacting professors at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of 30 % additional time

When a student is a certified LSD, it is required to contact the Referring Teacher of the DISABILITY and DSA Commission for DINOGMI: Prof. N. Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it ) and evaluated the single case, he will send to the teachers the necessary directions both for  lessons development  and for modality of examination
