AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course introduces the themes of recovery and appreciation of the existing historical nautical heritage both from a cultural and cognitive point of view of the asset (history, technical, technological and compositional characteristics) and provides the basic tools (methodology and approach to the project) necessary to deal with an exemplary case study with the aim of developing in students the sensitivity and skills useful to address the nautical project on existing boats.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objectives of the module are:

- to introduce the student to the way of recovery and refitting of existing nautical units as a specific field of the project;

- provide an awareness and knowledge of the floating nautical heritage by associating it with the broader theme of Cultural Heritage;

- provide the student with a methodology for approaching the design, recovery and valorisation of Cultural and Nautical Heritage.

Fundamental training moments are the creation of sensitivity towards this particular sector of pleasure boating, the communications dedicated to learning the elements of the design process and the practical activities aimed at laying the foundations for the actual design.

As part of the module, students will acquire a project approach methodology oriented towards the recovery and refitting of existing units and will apply tools such as

- research and analysis;

- conception and synthesis;

- elaboration and drafting of graphics

- sketches, technical drawings, models;

- presentation and exhibition of their work.

At the end of the module, the student will be able to:

- Recognise and describe the cultural and technical value of historical nautical heritage, with reference to the concepts of restoration, refitting and restyling;

- Analyse the technical, constructional and material characteristics of historic vessels, applying criteria for cataloguing and critically reading artefacts;

- Apply design methods and tools for setting up a nautical asset recovery or enhancement project;

- Elaborate initial design proposals through the use of graphic and digital techniques, including two- and three-dimensional representations, technical sketches and conceptual models;

- Effectively argue and present one's own research, analysis and project work with the use of appropriate technical language.

The practical project activities will enable students to learn to manage their social interactions with a collaborative attitude and constructive communication; they will also lead to autonomous decision-making, an aptitude for managing team work, coordination between several people and different skills as well as the ability to manage uncertainty.

PREREQUISITES

There are no specific requirements.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is delivered through different and complementary activities, the main being:

- theoretical lessons and seminaries;

- group activities (debates, brief, brainstorming, project reviews…);

- external visits;

- practical lessons (exercises and short projects).

The second part of the module is expressly dedicated to the development of the project theme organised in mixed working groups and with the support of the lecturers, a theme that will be the subject of presentation and evaluation during the examination.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module concerns:

- restoration, refitting and restyling principles, also for not nautical contexts;

- recognising, awareness and categorizing of historical vessels;

- introduction to traditional features, materials and construction technologies typical of historical vessels;

- approach to the restoration project, consisting of guidelines, design process and method;

- case studiy presentation and practical application.

During the module, external visits, detail studies, exercises and short projects are also considered.

Both theoretical lessons and practical application of Disegno Industriale 2-1 are fundamental to the design activities of Disegno Industriale 2-2.

The specific topic of the year is defined before the lessons start and it will be promptly communicated to students on the aulaweb page.  Aulaweb is the main tool for communication and weekly updates by professors.

The practical and design applications involve the students' use of some of the software illustrated in other modules, including those included in the Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud packages, Rhinoceros for two- and three-dimensional project graphics, lidar tecnologies for surveying using tablets and commercially available free software.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination takes place orally and consists of the presentation and critical discussion of the written and graphic works developed during the module.

During the interview, the student must

-  Illustrate his or her work with property of language and methodological coherence, using tools such as presentations and synthesis graphs to support the discourse;

- Justify the design choices made in the light of the theoretical contents learnt and the research phase preparatory to the project;

- Demonstrate critical awareness of the historical, cultural and technical context of the theme developed.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation is based on:

- Completeness and graphic quality of the papers (consistency with the assigned theme);

- Ability to analyse and synthesise, linking theory and design practice;

- Clarity of presentation and command of terminology during the oral presentation;

- Transversal skills demonstrated (teamwork management, autonomy, problem solving).

The final outcome also contributes to the verification of competences related to the Open Badges foreseen:

- Personal competence (basic level),

- Learning to learn skills (basic level),

- Project management and project creation (advanced level).

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with disabilities or learning disorders are allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the Delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.
