The learning outcomes are: To know the 12 principles of green chemistry; To recognize and explain the different techniques of green chemistry; To apply and compare green chemistry indicators; To classify the various types of catalysis for biomass valorization. TEACHING METHODS Lectures with slide presentations, thematic seminars on specific topics, and practical laboratory experience focusing on the molecular structure and the properties of polymeric materials. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Introduction and Green Chemistry Metrics: 12 principles of green chemistry; Importance of different types of waste; Recycling of plastic materials and cans; Green chemistry metrics. Biomass and Sustainable Technologies: Catalysis for biomass valorization; New green technologies; Platform molecules; Polymers from biomass. Laboratory Experience: Synthesis of polyaspartic acid. ASSESSMENT METHODS Aim of the exam and assessment methods The aim of the exam is to verify the achievement of the intended learning objectives both for the theoretical and labs topics. During the laboratory classes, teachers will assess the extent of students' participation and their capability in conducting experimental work. The oral exam will ascertain whether the student has attained an adequate level of knowledge on the discussed topics. The effective attainment of the expected learning outcomes shall be assessed by evaluating the following aspects: - Ability to know and recognize the topics covered during the teaching. - Quality of dissertation. - Correct use of the specialised lexicon. If these objectives are not met, the student will be encouraged to further study the topics and attempt the exam again.
