OVERVIEW

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide a basic understanding of the principles, models and techniques used in mathematics applications to study the behavior of deformable, solid and fluid material systems.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, partecipants will be able to:

- identify the principles describing a large class of continuum systems;

- derive local equations that govern the dynamics of continuum systems;

- identify relevant properties of the solutions to the local equations describing the evolution of continuum systems;

- analyse the mathematical properties of the solutions to the local equations describing the evolution of continuum systems, also providing a physical interpretation.

PREREQUISITES

Standard courses of the Bachelor degree in Mathematics.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching style: In presence

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Generalities on mathematic modelling of deformable continuous sytems. Perfect fluids. Viscous fluids. Linear elastic solids. Specific examples: vibrating string.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

A. J. Chorin and J. E. Marsden, A Mathematical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, (1992) Springer.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is formed by an oral test on all the topics covered during the lectures.

Students with learning disorders ("disturbi specifici di apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the Lecturer of the course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During the oral exam, the student is expected to be able to introduce and explain the fundamental concepts covered in class, with particular attention to the statements and proofs of the main theorems. To assess the student’s ability to apply the tools learned during the course, some exercises will also be proposed.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Ask the professor for other information not included in the teaching schedule.
