CODE 81219 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 10 cfu anno 3 STATISTICA MATEM. E TRATTAM. INFORMATICO DEI DATI 8766 (L-35) - GENOVA TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW An internship is mandatory and takes place at the end of the three-year degree programme. The internships allow students to test and complete the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during their studies through concrete contact with the world of work and with professionals in the sector. They are an essential feature of the SMID programme. It corresponds to 10 ETCS, at least 250 working hours and should last at least 2 months. It can only be started after the student has obtained all the ECTS of the taught modules (except for the final exam), with a maximum of 10 ECTS. It is carried out under the supervision of a teacher or an external person appointed by the Board of Studies (teaching tutor) and a company tutor. The final project is a distnct teaching activity distinct from the work placement. However, it can also be related to it. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide students with work experience that develops and evaluates both the modeling and phenomena analysis skills acquired during the course of study, and the degree of autonomy and capacity to interact in mixed skills working groups. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The Mathematical Statistics and Data Management degree programme is characterised by the fact that the applied aspects of the subject, particularly in the field of mathematical statistics and probability theory, are at the forefront from the very beginning of the course. In this way, graduates should already have the skills and professionalism required in the world of work at the end of the three-year programme. The internship contributes to the formation of a graduate who knows how to apply theories and techniques to collect, analyse and transform data into information, define models to interpret data and phenomena of which the data are instances in order to find solutions used in the production of goods and services and in scientific research. The internship aims to consolidate and develop both the ability to model and analyse phenomena and the autonomy and ability to interact in heterogeneous groups. A final written and oral report also enables the development and assessment of students' presentation and synthesis skills. The institutions and companies that have hosted SMID interns have confirmed the high level of skills taught in the programme, which are also directly applicable. Collaborative relationships have been established with most of the institutions and companies, which have also made it possible to refine the training objectives and strategies of the programme in order to better adapt them to the requirements of the world of work. PREREQUISITES The internship can only be taken when the student has acquired all ECTS of the educational activities (except the final examination), with the exception of a maximum of 10 CFU. Before the internship can be carried out, the certificate of the online course on health and safety at work must be obtained. See the instructions on the programme's website. TEACHING METHODS The internship is carried out under the supervision of a teacher or an external person appointed by the study programme council (didactic tutor) and a company tutor. It is usually carried out in the host company, in a period and at a time agreed and specified in the training project. The specific modalities of the student's participation in the company's activities (period, time, designation of the company tutor and the university tutor, ...) are indicated in the training project of the internship. The trainee is obliged to regularly inform the didactic tutor about the progress of the internship. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The specific programme of each internship is described in the individual training project. To start an internship, it is necessary to fill in an internship proposal and an individual training project for each intern. The platform tirocinitesi.unige.it is used for this purpose. Before completing a proposal on the platform, the company/organisation/laboratory where the internship is to be carried out must be indicated, which must be related to the SMID training path. Above all, the topic, dates and everything related to the internship must be agreed between the company, the student and the SMID Internship Committee. To this end, two meetings are organised each year between the third-year SMID students and the SMID Internship Committee: on the first day of classes of the third year and on the Monday before Easter. It is counterproductive to opt for an internship before having passed all exams, except for the 10 CFU exams. The titles of some of the internships carried out are available on the Aulaweb page of the degree programmes of the Department of Mathematics. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD EVA RICCOMAGNO Ricevimento: For organizational issues contact by email Eva Riccomagno <eva.riccomagno@unige.it> LESSONS Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The internship is assessed by a special committee with a positive or negative result, without a grade being awarded. In the case of a positive evaluation, one point (out of 110) will be added to the final grade. The student must prepare a WELL written report of a maximum of 8 edited pages, including graphs and tables, and give an oral presentation explaining the work carried out with particular reference to the statistical/mathematical/computer science methodology used and highlighting any new knowledge acquired. The written report must include an accurate and concise description of the dataset(s) possibly used in the internship in Tidydata format. The written report must be sent to the Internship Committee, consisting of Professors Porro, Riccomagno and Sommariva for the current academic year, at least 5 days before the oral presentation. The presentation must be about 15 minutes long. The deadline for the presentation is at least 20 days before the final submission date, is agreed with the committee and is normally indicated on the AulaWeb of DIMA degrees. The assessment will take into account the report of the company tutor (in writing if he/she is unable to attend the presentation). ASSESSMENT METHODS The internship allows the assessment of the modelling and analytical skills acquired by the student throughout the course, as well as the degree of autonomy achieved and the ability to interact in heterogeneous groups. FURTHER INFORMATION It is advisable to prepare a CV to present to companies that might offer the internship. Advice on writing a CV can be found at the university careers advice centre and in the presentation (from minute 4:26) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgE2KiY1fPA&t=4s It is highly recommended to join the SMID LinkedIn group. The internship can be completed abroad, e.g. by participating in the Erasmus+ programme for internships. In this case, the foreign company, institution or laboratory where the internship is to be completed must be determined in advance. _______________________________ Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sergio Di Domizio (sergio.didomizio@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.
