OVERVIEW

The course in Metaphysics is an introduction to the main topics of analytical metaphysics: the notions of substance and metaphysical dependence, the notions of object, identity, and numerability, the notions of essence and essentialism, the notions of part, whole, and composition, the notion of causality, and the notion of personal identity. Some lectures will be devoted to the topic of the methodology of metaphysics and philosophy in general.

The teaching assumes knowledge of basic logic. The course in Metaphysics is strongly discouraged for students who do not fulfil this requirement.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Metaphysics course aims to introduce students to the study of the classic themes of metaphysics. In particular, after having clarified what metaphysics does and with which methodology, we will study the notions of substance and metaphysical dependence, the notions of object, identity, and countability, the notions of essence and essentialism, the notions of part, whole, and composition, the notion of causality, the notion of personal identity.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students will be able to master the main topics of analytical metaphysics. Students will acquire the necessary competence to face the autonomous study of metaphysical essays and the in-depth study of topics that could be of interest for the writing of the degree thesis.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Students will be assessed on the basis of (i) knowledge of the contents covered during the course, (ii) ability to analyse and reconstruct philosophical arguments, and (iii) appropriateness in the use of philosophical language.
