OVERVIEW

Educational psychology focuses on the psychological functioning of individuals within educational and training contexts.

The perspective can thus address the learning process, the factors involved in it, as well as the psychological well-being of those engaged in that process within a specific context.

The course aims to provide basic knowledge and examples of how a psychologist can operate within educational and training settings

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is aimed at (1) providing knowledge on the main contents of educational psychology, (2) providing examples of actions that can be undertaken by psychologists working in educational contexts, (3) stimulating the acquisition of skills useful for work in educational contexts.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

  • have knowledge and understanding of concepts and theoretical models in the field of educational psychology;

  • be able to apply the acquired knowledge to analyze both situations they may encounter in their professional practice and projects related to training, research, intervention, and consultancy;

  • be able to identify appropriate courses of action depending on the specific situations and interlocutors, and to navigate the design of relevant projects;

  • develop reflective and communication skills suited to their professional role, enabling them to interact effectively with both specialist and non-specialist audiences;

  • take into account the complexity that may characterize their area of intervention, and demonstrate independent judgment and reasoning skills;

  • enhance their learning abilities in order to independently deepen and update their knowledge in the discipline.

PREREQUISITES

Students are expected to have already acquired the content covered in the Developmental Psychology course (Year 1), as well as the fundamental concepts of General Psychology and Cognitive Processes (Year 2)

TEACHING METHODS

In addition to lectures, participatory teaching methods will be used.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course covers the following topics: an introduction to educational psychology, the concept of learning, learning contexts, school-related learning, variables that influence the learning process (motivation, metacognition, self-regulation), individual differences, relationships within learning environments, and school well-being.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam methods are designed to assess:

  • the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of concepts;

  • the ability to use the acquired knowledge to analyze and understand example situations that one may encounter in practice;

  • the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to identify appropriate courses of action;

  • the capacity to critically reflect on projects related to training, research, intervention, and consultancy;

  • the ability to communicate appropriately within one’s role, including the use of specialized terminology.
