AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides students with the tools for metalinguistic analysis, with a special focus on specialized texts, in order to enhance students' translation and interpreting skills between Italian and Spanish. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims at providing students with sound knowledge and skills in order to understand the theoretical and practical basis of translation and interpreting. The following will be dealt with: economic-financial translation, legal-judicial translation and simultaneous interpreting. Specific aims: Develop knowledge and train skills in professional translation and interpreting from both a theoretical and a practical point of view, combining research perspectives and professional standards. Develop self-assessment skills. At the end of the course students will be able to: Identify and solve translation problems in a strategic and effective manner, also taking into account as many contextual and situational variables as possible for each assignment. Apply knowledge, techniques and tools learnt in a functional and useful way according to the communicative situation and context. Autonomously organize and network with other colleagues in order to apply their competences in a cooperative way. At the end of the course students will be able to: identify and solve translation problems in a strategic and effective manner, also taking into account as many contextual and situational variables as possible for each assignment; apply knowledge, techniques and tools learnt in a functional and useful way according to the communicative situation and context; autonomously organise and network with other colleagues in order to apply their competences in a cooperative way. TEACHING METHODS Lectures and interpreting/translation practice, including team work. Attendance is not obligatory but strongly recommended. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The syllabus for attenders and non-attenders is the same. Linguistics module: In the theory module, students will be introduced to the theories underlying the various practical exercises of the course. Practical modules: Audiovisual Translation module (I and II semester) Economic and Financial translation (I semester) Interpreting: simultaneous interpreting practice from and into Spanish combined with training in interpreting-related soft skills (I and II semester) Legal and Judicial translation module (semester II) RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Only the theory module has a compulsory bibliography, which will be indicated as soon as the departmental council has assigned the course holder. Please note that teaching materials are the same for both attending and non-attending students. The student will present an original work analyzing it from a theoretical point of view. Technical-scientific translation module: a translation test from and into Spanish Interpreting module: an simultaneous interpreting exercise from and into Spanish. Examination enrolment is through the Ateneo website. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam for attenders and non-attenders is the same The following will be assessed: adequacy, functionality, accuracy, and reliability. Both contents and the general approach (i.e. paralinguistic and non-verbal communication in the case of interpreting) will also be taken into account. Continuous assessment (peer evaluation, feedback from outsiders in simulations, etc.), and both written and oral final tests.
