OVERVIEW

Computer skills today represent an essential resource both in the workplace and in everyday life. This course aims to provide an overview of information and communication technologies, with the goal of developing in students a critical awareness of the digital world by integrating theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective is to provide the students with a set of knowledge and skills in the field of information technology to support them in both academic path and professional activity. The course aims to provide theoretical and applicative knowledge for the understanding and use of computers and computer networks, and for the advanced use of productivity software.   

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will:

  • have acquired a set of basic knowledge about information and communication technologies (ICT);

  • have developed an appropriate vocabulary to describe commonly used digital tools in the workplace;

  • have gained professional skills in using application tools for personal productivity, which they will use at various stages of their academic path and later in their professional activities.

In particular, this course will provide them with skills in processing structured documents by utilizing advanced features for text editing and multilingual writing.

TEACHING METHODS

Blended course format: 6 hours in-person plus 12 hours delivered remotely through both lecture-based and interactive teaching methods on the AulaWeb platform.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. Attention will be given to the IT aspects related to languages.

The main topics covered in the theoretical part include: fundamentals of hardware and software, information encoding with a special focus on text encoding, computer networks, introductory concepts on cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

For the practical part, the course focuses on: types of word processing software, advanced tools for editing structured documents, and multilingual writing.

Only topics that are included in the online videos and slides on AulaWeb are to be considered for the exam.

Textbook and readings are the same for both attending and non-attending students.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written exam consisting of an online quiz with a practical test.

For language students, it is possible to obtain recognition for the ECDL Certification.

It is possible to take the same test in different exam sessions within the same exam period, provided that a minimum score of 10/30 is achieved in the first session.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam consists of a test covering both the theoretical and practical parts.

The theoretical questions aim to assess the knowledge acquired by the students.

The practical questions require performing a hands-on activity in order to provide the answer, with the purpose of evaluating the skills developed.

The practical questions are similar in format to the exercises students must complete to earn the skills Badge, which is mandatory to register for the exam.
