The course analyzes the range of tourism services, particularly accommodation businesses (hotels and non-hotels) and travel agencies (tour operators and retail agencies), and, for each business, explores the fundamental principles of organization, management, and marketing strategies.
Generally, however, the tourism development of a destination relies on the availability of local resources even more than on the operations of businesses in the sector. Tourism is therefore a complex process that involves and overlaps various elements of a geographical space, both physical and human.
The authenticity of a place is the driving force that pushes tourism businesses to provide the services necessary for the enjoyment of the space, but at the same time, such enjoyment must consider sustainable territorial governance to avoid losing their competitive advantage.
The course aims to introduce students to destination management and marketing, organizations engaged in tourism and characteristics, and problems associated with running a firm in tourism. Major topics of the course are strategy, marketing, the use of the Internet, pricing, and managing staff in hotels, tour operators, cruise lines, conference organizers.
