    OVERVIEW

    The teaching unit of General Mathematics introduces the basic concepts of linear algebra and mathematical analysis required for economic studies. The course is one of the fundamental first-year teaching units, providing the mathematical foundations necessary for understanding economic subjects.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The aim of the course is to provide the basic mathematical tools employed by the other courses delivered by the Department of Economics at the Bachelor level.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    At the end of the teaching unit, the student will be able to:
    - Apply the fundamental concepts of linear algebra (vectors, matrix calculus, linear systems) to problems of economic interest, by solving exercises and practical cases.
    - Use the main techniques of mathematical analysis (real functions of a real variable, limits, derivatives, integrals) to analyze and solve quantitative problems in the economic field.
    - Clearly and formally express the acquired mathematical concepts during exercises and examinations.
    - Critically evaluate the conditions and limitations of the mathematical tools studied, with reference to specific economic contexts.

    PREREQUISITES

    A solid knowledge of mathematics as commonly taught in upper secondary school is required.

    TEACHING METHODS

    The teaching unit is delivered through lectures and exercises. At the beginning of the lessons, students with certified disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD), or special educational needs are required to contact both the instructor and the Department's disability representative to agree on teaching and examination methods that take into account individual learning needs, while respecting the learning objectives of the teaching unit. Teaching materials are available on Aulaweb. Attendance is not compulsory.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    - Review of set operations, number sets, and the concept of a function
    - Linear Algebra: Real vectors, matrices, determinants, inverse matrices, linear systems
    - Real functions of a real variable: Limits, continuity, derivatives, function analysis. Introduction to real functions of several variables
    - Integration Theory: Indefinite integral, definite integral, improper integrals

    RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

    Some useful textbooks for self-study will be indicated by the instructor at the beginning of classes and listed on Aulaweb.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    The exam consists of a written test. Any additional information on the examination procedures will be provided at the beginning of the lessons. The exam is considered passed with a grade of at least 18/30.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The assessment will evaluate both the knowledge of theoretical concepts and the ability to apply them clearly and coherently to specific problems. The evaluation will consider the correctness of the solutions, the appropriate use of mathematical terminology, and the ability to provide sound reasoning.
