Engineering for Industrial Sustainability focuses on efficient use of resources and minimization of waste, with reference to the product life cycle. In Engineering for Industrial Sustainability, efforts are made to extend life of products and improve their energy efficiency; nondestructive testing methods fit into this framework by allowing materials to be inspected and tested without compromising their structural integrity, thus reducing the need for spare parts, minimizing waste and extending their use.
Interesting implications about safety and environmental compliance will also be addressed. Engineering for Industrial Sustainability can address compliance with environmental standards, while Non-Destructive Testing Methods can ensure that products and materials are safe for use and do not present unexpected hazards.
To effectively engage with the content of the Non-Destructive Testing Methods module, students are expected to have the following background knowledge:
metallurgical properties of steel and aluminum alloys;
fundamental plastic deformation processes (e.g., rolling and forging);
essential aspects of foundry operations.
