OVERVIEW

The course provides theoretical and practical tools to understand individual and group behavior in work contexts, with a special focus on the relationship between psychological well-being and the work environment.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • To know the main concepts and theoretical models of work and organizational psychology (Dublin Descriptor 1).
  • Apply this knowledge to understand individual and collective dynamics in healthcare and organizational settings (Descriptor 2).
  • Recognize and critically analyze the psychological variables related to well-being, stress and professional burnout.
  • Recognize the roles of communication, leadership, organizational culture and the work group in the effectiveness of healthcare contexts.
  • Use an appropriate psychological language to describe organizational and relational phenomena.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of 10 hours of training activities, most of which consist of theoretical lectures. However, the active participation of students will be required for the analysis of typical situations.

Attendance is compulsory

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

  • The meaning of work: values, motivations, work-life balance
  • Work-related stress and burnout
  • The group: characteristics, types, leadership

  • Cooperation and conflict in work contexts
  • Communication and relationship in the professional field

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The verification of learning takes place only through the final exam which aims to ascertain the effective acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes. In order to pass the exam, therefore report a grade of not less than 18/30, the student must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Understand the main concepts and theoretical models of work and organizational psychology.
  • Apply this knowledge to understand individual and collective dynamics in healthcare contexts.
  • Recognize the psychological variables related to well-being, stress and professional burnout.
  • Analyze the relational dynamics in work groups.
  • Analyze the variables related to effective communication.

Final grade (out of 30) will reflect the student’s:

  • Ability to deal with the required topics in a transversal and critical way;
  • Correctness, clarity, synthesis and fluidity of exposition;
  • Mastery of the subject;
  • Adoption of appropriate terminology

The grade of 30/30 cum laude will be awarded when the knowledge/skills of the subject are excellent.
