AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

To acquire knowledge of the origin and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, degenerative and neoplastic processes responsible for human pathology. To know the principles of human nutrition, nutritional requirements, and the mechanisms by which nutrition contributes to the maintenance of health status. Have knowledge of existing methods for assessing nutritional health, nutritional intake and know of their limitations. Gain knowledge of clinical pharmacology to understand drug-nutrient interactions and the use of food as a drug.

TEACHING METHODS

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

The teaching consists of 20 hours performed by frontal lessons, Attendance is required for at least 75% of the face-to-face hours.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The teaching of Pharmacology aims to make the student acquire the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic fundamentals that characterize the pharmacological profile and mechanism of action of drugs. The principles that form the rational basis of drug therapy in relation to different diseases will also be explained, and possess the necessary tools to evaluate pharmacological approaches, drug activity and side effects

General Pharmacology:

Drugs (active ingredient, excipients) and pharmaceutical forms; routes of drug administration; Pharmacokinetics; Pharmacodynamics; individual variability in drug response.

Elements of pharmaco-toxicology: toxic effects of drugs, drug-drug interaction, abuse, tolerance, dependence.

Adverse reactions. Pharmacovigilance.

Drugs and nutrition: pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between drugs and foods.

Special Pharmacology:

Basics related to action, efficacy and toxicity of drugs belonging to the following therapeutic classes:

1.         Pharmacology of the endocrine-metabolic system: drugs for the treatment of thyroid dysfunction, corticosteroids, insulin, and oral antidiabetic drugs

2.         Active drugs in dyslipidemia, obesity and osteoporosis

3.         Pharmacological treatment of major eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorders).

4.         Drugs of the gastrointestinal system.

5.         Antihypertensive drugs

6.         Pharmacology and toxicology of vitamins and dietary supplements.

7.         Alcohol: pharmacological and toxicological aspects.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

All the slides shown during the frontal lessons will be made available to the students on the Aulaweb site.

All the pharmacology textbooks for healthcare professions are suitable to integrate the lessons

For example    The Basics of Pharmacology (Clark, Finkel, Rey, Whalen) ed. Zanichelli

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

End-of-course examination aims to assess the achievement of the teaching objectives of the teaching of Pharmacology and to integrate it with the other teachings of the C.I.

The exam of pharmacology will be performed as an interview, focusing on the topics discussed during the lessons

Oral

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Verification of learning is through the final exam only, which is designed to verify the student's effective acquisition of the expected learning outcomes. In order to pass the exam, with a grade of not less than 18/30, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the molecular and cellular basis of the pathologies covered in the course and be able to connect the topics of the program.

Contributing to the final grade expressed in thirtieths are:

- Ability to deal cross-culturally and critically with the required topics;

- Correctness, clarity, synthesis and fluency of exposition;

- Mastery of the subject matter;

- Adoption of appropriate terminology.

The grade of 30/30 with possible honors will be awarded when subject knowledge/skills are excellent.
