CODE 80789 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 9 cfu anno 1 MEDICINA E CHIRURGIA 11887 (LM-41 R) - GENOVA LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA MODULES Questo insegnamento è composto da: ANTHROPOLOGY COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGLISH 1 CLINICAL PSYCOLOGY GENERAL PSYCOLOGY HISTORY OF MEDICINE OVERVIEW To start the training path of the future doctor with full exposure to all the intercultural and interdisciplinary dimension of the profession, through a survey of the evolution of medical thought and of the challenging great ethical issues of today’s world. To identify medicine as space and perspective for human care, in a comprehensive view embracing the complexity of humans as subjects / objects of care, the interplay of health and disease, the wealth of care practices. To promote awareness of the relevance of Medical Humanities in the development of the medical training. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide a historical perspective on the evolution of medicine. Illustrate the concepts of health, disease, and care, and their changes over time and across different contexts, from a critical perspective. To promote reflections on the epistemology of medicine, the history of medical thought, the anthropology of health, and the ethics of care. To acquire the ability to critically analyze and compare different definitions and models of health and illness, understanding how these concepts are influenced by cultural, historical, and social factors. To develop the competence to trace the historical evolution of major medical paradigms and healthcare practices, highlighting significant changes in medical thought and therapeutic technologies. To gain the ability to integrate knowledge from various humanities and scientific disciplines for a more comprehensive understanding of medical and healthcare issues. TEACHING METHODS Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. The course includes lectures, seminars, video projections, guided educational tours and small group classroom activities. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course includes numerous, supposedly separate topics in order to represent the richness and variety of medicine, with a view to highlight its manifold anthropological, cultural and ethical issues at play. THE CONCEPT OF HEALTH, DISEASE AND CARE OVER TIME GENDER MEDICINE HISTORY OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES AND DIGITAL HEALTH EDUCATING IN CARE CARE OF THE HUMAN PERSON MIND AND BODY: A SINGLE ENTITY NUTRITION AND HEALTH CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE AND DEATH THE EVOLUTION OF MEDICINE CARE APPROACHES Classroom work will include seminars involving contributions of scholars with a varied cultural background, in the fields of biology and human sciences In addition, guided tours are planned for the A. Scarpa Ethnographic Museum, the Ex Manicomio di Quarto, and the Anatomy Museum, with contributions from integrated cultural, bioscientific, and humanistic perspectives. A written exam with closed-ended questions is scheduled: 16 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 16 minutes. A minimum score of 20 is required to pass, and this score will be communicated to the student. This result will not be included in the average grade for the Humanities 2 exam, which is taken in the second year of the course, but it remains an essential component for its feasibility ASSESSMENT METHODS For the evaluation of the History of Medicine course, an in-progress written exam graded on a scale of thirty will be administered. A minimum score of 21 is required to pass, and this score will be communicated to the student. This result will not be included in the average grade for the Humanities 2 exam, which is taken in the second year of the course, but it remains an essential component for its feasibility. The student must demonstrate knowledge of: - The main definitions and models of health and illness. - How cultural, historical, and social factors influence these concepts and be able to identify and explain these influences. - The fundamental concepts of the humanities and biological and medical sciences, and understand how these concepts interconnect. - How to integrate knowledge from different disciplines for a more comprehensive understanding of medical and healthcare issues.
