OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide specific knowledge in the field of Clinical Microbiology, evaluating, in particular, the etiopathogenetic mechanisms and diagnostic approaches in the field of Human Medicine.

The integrated course of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology is divided into 3 modules, extending over the first semester: Elements of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Microbiology Techniques, Applied Microbiology Techniques.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquire knowledge about the diversity of the microbial world. Know the main characteristics of the various microorganisms pathogenic to humans (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), their pathogenicity mechanisms, and the main infectious diseases of health interest. Know the main classes of chemotherapeutics and antibiotics and the main mechanisms of drug resistance. Acquire theoretical-practical knowledge of the main laboratory techniques for the identification of pathogens through bacteriological (direct and cultural), molecular (direct, indirect), serological and immunometric investigations. Know the potential applications of microbiology in healthcare, industrial and environmental fields. Acquire theoretical knowledge and laboratory techniques for the diagnosis of tuberculous and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Acquire theoretical knowledge on molecular biology and mass spectrophotometry techniques.
