AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course intends to provide tools and concepts for a sociological reading of educational processes, presenting the Sociology of Education main subjects. Particular attention will be given to socialization processes within different family forms, to inequalities in school systems, to socialization between peers and to the presence of second generations of immigrants in educational contexts. The laboratory activities are aimed at developing critical thinking on some concepts linked to family and parenting models present in contemporary Western society. Starting from the awareness of the social construction of these models, we will try to deepen our knowledge and its evolution over time and in different social contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

use the specific sociological terminology of the discipline

understand the theoretical concepts presented during the course (authors, theoretical approaches, historical and social contexts of reference, etc.)

explain and report on the theoretical concepts presented during the course (authors, theoretical approaches, historical and social contexts of reference, etc.)

analyze different educational contexts and phenomena in light of different theoretical approaches

acquire critical awareness through comparison between theoretical aspects and research and/or professional experiences presented in class and through study texts

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will be organized according to thematic areas in which the various topics of the course will be presented, also in collaboration with external experts invited to the lessons. Students will be required to participate actively through discussions and group work, brainstorming, role-playing, and using the materials provided by the instructor and uploaded to the course website, which will then be discussed together during the lessons. During the course, various materials (videos, documentaries, slides, scientific articles, etc.) will be used to supplement the texts. These materials are to be considered, to all intents and purposes, study materials on a par with the volumes indicated in the program. As stated in the course description, the course includes a number of laboratory hours that will take place in parallel with the theoretical parts held in the classroom. The laboratories will allow students to explore some of the macro-themes developed in class in greater depth.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will cover some of the main topics addressed by the discipline, with particular attention to:

the relationship between education and society and its transformations; the different processes of socialization and identity formation; socialization agencies and their role; educational systems and processes of inequality; changes in family forms in recent decades; contemporary family models and the demands of educational services; migration processes in today's society and their impact on educational systems.
