OVERVIEW

The Teaching Unit introduces students to the knowledge of the basic international rules  concerning shipping and maritime transports as well as marine insurance. International maritime law is essential for students who intend to work in shipping companies or administrations active in the maritime and port sector in the future or to exercise maritime professions related to it.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the teaching unit is to introduce students to the knowledge of the basic items concerning the vessels’ utilization, including their safety and security, and maritime carriages of goods, through an analysis of the relevant national, international and E.C. laws and rules.

The Teaching Unit complies with the STCW provisions on skills and competences required for deck officers, marine engineer and electrotechnical officers providing with all the necessary theoretical knowledges.

In particular, individual study, attendance and participation in the proposed learning activities will allow the student to:

Identify the sources applicable to shipping matters;
Understand the main regulatory provisions that govern them;
Understand the contest of the main standard contracts adopted in the practice of maritime transport trade;
Understand regulatory texts of international origin, of the European Union  relating to navigation matters;
Express in appropriate legal technical language.
Clearly illustrate and explain what you have learned.

TEACHING METHODS

The Teaching Unit consist of lectures  during which the main notions of international maritime law will be presented and analyzed, in light of the relevant discipline of international origin, European or national, as well as analyzed standard contracts and practical situation. The calendar with the topics of each lesson, with the indication of the pages of the manuals relating to them, and any supplementary materials are published Aulaweb.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the School's contact person for disability at the beginning of teaching to agree on possible teaching arrangements that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns. ·     Maritime Administration 

·     Maritime Zones and jurisdiction

·     The ship and its administrative regime (concept of ship, ship registration and nationality, technical and human seaworthiness, ship documents and certificates)

·     Safety and Security Rules: International Standards (Solas and Marpol Conventions, ISM Code and ISPS Code, STCW Convention, Maritime Labour Convention, Colregs, etc.)

·     Port and Navigation Controls, (PSC, VTS, etc.) – Classification Societies

·     The shipping operators :

shipowner, shipmanager, master/officers/crew, vessel’s agent, broker and forwarding agent

·     Ships and property:

-Shipbuilding and Ships Sale Contracts

·     Charterparties and carriages by sea:

-  Bareboat charter and vessel Leasing contract

 - Time charter, Voyage charter, Contract of   affreightment, Service contract

-   Carriage of goods and containers by Sea in national and international traffics

-   -   Carriage of Dangerous Goods (IMDG Code)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is written and consists of a series of multiple choice questions related to most of the topics covered during the lessons. Only students who have attended at least 2/3 of the lessons will be given the opportunity to take the exam in pre-appeal.

Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam aims to verify the actual knowledge and acquisition by the student of the concepts learned during the module and so:

- identify and define legal concepts using appropriate language;
- identify and define the role and responsibilities of the various parties involved in the shipping operations, both on safety/security and commercial matters
- identify and apply the main international and EU regulatory provisions governing the carrying out of transport and maritime safety/secutiry activities

Students with a disability or SLD certification may request the use of compensatory measures (e.g. additional time, concept maps and diagrams, modifications in the written/oral mode) during the examination, following the procedure indicated in the guidelines (p. 5) published qui
