OVERVIEW

The course deals with three main topics:

- manoeuvrability (basic motion laws, standard manoeuvres, control means, manoeuvrability rules, different approaches for the evaluation of the manoeuvring characteristics)

- seakeeping (basic motion laws, response amplitude operator, sea spectrum, ship motions in determined conditions, operability, stabilizing devices)

- dynamic stability

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching deals with the motion law definition as well as the hydrodynamics characteristics regulating ship and yacht behaviour from the manoeuvrability, seakeeping and dynamic stability sides.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the student with the basic technical and theoretical knowledge relating to the prediction of ship motions. In naval architecture, traditionally, the ship motion is studied by manoeuvrability or seakeeping. Specifically, the course consists of two main topics:

- Manoeuvrability: Study of the motion of the ship subject to its manoeuvring devices without environmental effects.

- Seakeeping: Study of the ship motions subject to waves.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons on the different topics. Practical classworks on manoeuvring and seakeeping.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the School's disability liaison at the beginning of teaching to agree on possible teaching arrangements that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

In detail, the lessons deal with:

Part 1: Ship Controllability (Introduction, Governing equations, Motion Stability, Manoeuvring characteristics and standard manoeuvres, Summary of existing rules, Model tests / Simulation, Steering devices / Rudder design, Slow speed manoeuvrability / Shallow and restricted waters, Planing crafts manoeuvrability)

Part 2: Seakeeping (Introduction, Linear systems – a review, Ship responses in regular waves, Ship motions – governing equations, Numerical approach (brief overview), Typical Response Amplitude Operators (RAO), Ship motions in irregular waves, Wave spectra – Response spectra, Ship Operability (short and long term), Means for active and passive stabilization of ship motions, Planing crafts seakeeping)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The student will be evaluated by means of an oral examination on all the course program (including manoeuvrability and seakeeping). There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February). Some mandatory home-works will be provided during the oral session, them will be defined during the lessons.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will consist in the verification of coursework carried out during lectures and in the verification of the level of knowledge gained by the student. The oral exam moreover will allow to evaluate the communicating skills of the student.

The assignment of the exam grade will take into account:
1) knowledge and understanding of the covered topics;
2) ability and clarity of exposition;
3) ability to solve problems related to the covered topics;

FURTHER INFORMATION

The students have to sign up for the exams via the on-line website.

Ask the professor for other information not included in the teaching schedule.
