AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the basics for understanding fluid motion, with particular emphasis on free surface flows. Models commonly used to study river currents are introduced, both in steady-state cases and considering wave propagation, along with elements of sediment transport. Finally, the characteristics of sea waves are studied.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will provide basic knowledge on fluid mechanics. In particular we will derive the equations of motion and will discuss some simple solutions. WE will also discuss how a turbulent flow can be studied with simplified models. In the second part of the course we will discuss free surface flows, with applications to river hydraulics (propagation of flood waves) and maritime engineering (basic notions of sea waves).

TEACHING METHODS

The course foresees 50 hours of lessons. During each lecture students will be asked to actively participate by solving exercises and by discussing the contents of the lecture.

The exam course consists of an oral discussion of the contents of the course. Students will have to show an understanding of the subject, the ability to synthesise and illustrate the main concepts and critically elaborate the acquired knowledge.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The main contents of the course are as follows:

    1. Basics of fluid mechanics

      • basics of kinematics and dynamics of fluids

      • the Navier-Stokes equations
