OVERVIEW

Food safety and sustainability in the European Union are promoted through a complex network of sectorial actions, from common agricultural and fisheries policies to consumer protection and animal health.

The course aims at providing students with the tools to understand (i) objectives and competences of the European Union in this field, (ii) the bodies and institutions that exercise them and (iii) the rules of functioning.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will acquire the methodological tools and general skills relating to the functioning of the legal system of the European Union with particular reference to the subject of food safety and sustainability. They will be able to understand and analyse current legal issues in this area, as well as independently develop possible solutions to open questions.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The first part of the course is dedicated to the institutional structure and sources of law of the European Union. In this part, students will acquire knowledge of:

(i) Institutions and rules of operation of the legal system of the European Union;

(ii) System of sources and regulatory procedure leading to their adoption;

(iii) Instruments of judicial protection;

(iv) European citizenship and rights deriving from it;

(v) ​​Principles regulating the system of competences and their exercise.

In the second part of the course, instead, students will learn about the areas of intervention of European Union law, with reference to the subject of food safety and sustainability, with particular reference to;

(i) Relevant competences of the European Union in the field of food (common agricultural and fisheries policies, consumer protection rules; trade rules);

(ii) Strategic objectives (with particular reference to the implementation of the European Commission Strategy “From farm to fork for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system, COM (2020) 381)

(iii) Implementation tools and relevant practice

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the necessary skills to understand the functioning of the European Union legal system in general and with specific reference to the sector of food safety and sustainability.

Students will be able to apply what they have learned to concrete cases, having acquired the ability to identify, interpret and systematically read the relevant legal provisions of European Union law.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Exams are usually held in person, orally and during the official exam sessions.

Usually, three questions on the program are formulated by the teacher for a duration of approximately 15-20 minutes.

In addition, students who attend at least 2/3 of the lessons are also given the opportunity to take the exam through optional intermediate written tests (multiple choice tests and open questions) that replace the oral exam for the corresponding part.

Attendance at at least 50% of the lessons allows students to bring the program planned for attending students to the oral exam.

The course is in Italian.
