AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The educational objective of the course is to provide knowledge of the interaction between drugs and sports performance, with particular attention to the doping properties of drugs and the problem of Doping in sports.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching of pharmacology in sports and doping is aimed to describe the use the counterindications and the toxicity of the most relevanr drugs used to treat acute or chronic conditions associated with sports, and  odten abused with doping purposes. Many of these drugs are hygly toxic and inserted in the prohibited list of almost every antidoping agencies in the world thus posing a relevant danger to athletes health and their careeers. Hence, the most important outcome of the teaching of pharmacology is forming personnel capable to detect a pharmacological abuse from a correct use and rise among their trainees the awareness of the harm of doping   

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching will be held in form of frontal classes. in aulaweb section of UNIGE website students may download PDF files corresponfing to the powerpoint presentation that will be showed in the classroom. A microsoft team channel will be shared at the beginning of the course to perform classes in case of severe meteo alerts. Students with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, may want to contact the teacher and the dedicated SLD representative in the Department before class begins, to liaise and arrange the specific teaching methods so that the learning aims and outcomes may be met.

Pharmacologic therapies in emergency

  • Pharmacological treatment of allergic attack (Anti-hystamine drugs, glucocorticoids, epinephrine)
  • Pharmacological control of broncospasm (beta-2 agonists, glucocorticoids, leukotriens inhibitors)
  • Pharmacological control of pain  (FANS, acetoaminophene, opiates, adiuvant drugs, miorelaxants)
  • Pharmacological approach to cardiac emergencies (acetylsalicilic acid, antianginal drugs, beta blockers, diuretics)

The teaching of pharmacology in sport and doping belongs to the second semester of first year of the course. Therefore, lessons will start in the month of march.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Exams will be held in form of interviews, in presence only.

Students with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs,will be examined according with the rules that has been certified by University of Genova (extra-time in written tests, or the use of conceptual maps, upon the approval by the teacher, for interviews).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Interviews will address student's capacity to know the most relevant pharmacological therapies among sport pratictioners and balance their utility with their toxicity,  Particular emphasis will be placed on their capacity to raise awareness of the danger of pharmacological abuse and doping among their present of future students.
