CODE 118193 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 1 SAFE TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS ENGINEERING 11920 (LM-26 R) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR SECS-P/06 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: TRANSPORT ECONOMICS AND POLICIES AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides key competences for performing economic appraisal and planning in the mobility, logistics, and transport sectors. Moreover, local economic impacts and performance indicators will be presented and discussed so to provide key tools for performing assessment and evaluations, linking social science issues to engineering competences. In order to achieve its aim, the course provides knowledge of specific features related to different transport modes, competition elements, and industrial organization features within the markets where the different private and public bodies operate. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The module provides an understanding of the macro and micro economic framework of reference for the transport economics and addresses the geographical and territorial aspects of transport at different scales, deepening the assessment capabilities of students, relevant regional and geographical knowledge, and the key aspects of market organisation, pricing, and regulation. Among the objectives of the course is the development of social interactions with a collaborative attitude, constructive communication, in different environments and the strengthening of decision-making autonomy. At the end of the module, students will be asked to produce a market analysis in order to show the achievement of the relevant skills. Such element will contribute to the overall evaluation and the more traditional theoretical exam. This approach aims at verifying the achievement of the relevant learning outcomes related to critical analysis and proper application of theoretical principles. TEACHING METHODS In-class teaching will be prioritised, following the course regulation and the timetable of the degree. There will be the possibility organise remote teaching, if/when aligned with specific scheduled activities and learning outcomes. Group and practical activities will promoted in parallel with the traditional in-class lectures. SYLLABUS/CONTENT In line with the overall training objectives, the module will be organized as follows: PART 1: Principle of economics, organization of transport markets and levels for competitiveness PART 2: Bascis on the evaluation of transport economic behavior, cost structure, demand and supply; Pricing approaches. PART 3: Competition in/for the market. Economic regulation, externalities, competition PART 4: The problem of measurement, KPI and monitoring PART 5: Innovation, technology, regulation and their market effects PART 6: Socio-economic impact assessment and the role of transport in the local economy PART 7: Transport modes, and the growing role of intermodality Each part of the teaching is imagined to be aimed at transferring specific skills, in line with the module objectives to be achieved. The approach will be base on prioritizing theoretical knowledge at first and subsequently analyze specific use cases and challenges in the real world of transport. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam is divided in two parts: 1) Questions during the oral exam will aim at verifying theoretical knowledge. 2) A written report will be asked to verify the ability to analyze and the acquisition of practical skills.
