AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This teaching module aims to provide the skills needed to develop an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) project for individuals with developmental disorders or acquired impairments. The course offers an understanding of the theoretical foundations, assessment methodologies, and communication and learning strategies for people with Complex Communication Needs (CCN).

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of human communication and recognize the importance of respecting the rights and needs of individuals with severe communication difficulties.

  • Learn and explain the fundamental principles of AAC intervention, evaluating its benefits and complexities.

  • Identify the communication needs of children with CCN.

  • Understand and critically analyze AAC strategies, tools, and technologies.

  • Reflect on assessment and intervention plans in AAC.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching approach adopted in the course includes in‑person lectures supported by audiovisual materials. Hands‑on workshops and small‑group activities are also planned. Active learning will be encouraged through dialogic interaction, as well as through the use of videos and slide presentations.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

  • Oral Examination.

  • A written multiple‑choice test will be administered ONLY IF one of the members of the Examination Committee is absent, and exclusively for that instructor’s module.

  • For students with certified Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or Special Educational Needs: students are invited to contact the instructor and the School/Department disability support officer at the beginning of the course to agree on any teaching or examination accommodations that, while respecting the learning objectives, take individual learning styles into account.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student must demonstrate an understanding of the concepts presented in the course and the ability to apply clinical reasoning related to the management of individuals with Complex Communication Needs (CCN).
