TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course aims to introduce the biomedical engineering student into the domain dealing with the basic items of electronics and corresponding measurements as related to the use of biomedical equipment. These are presented in their main different parts, at analogic an digital level, at deterministic and stochastic level when treating measurement issues as their output. Even if with limitations to a basic approach, such parts will be analyzed by considering the materials of which they are made, the physical components implementing their functional performance and, specifically of their corresponding circuit models, as useful for analysis and synthesis. Furthermore, the quality of the measurements which may render valuable their application for biological entities, special attention is devoted  to the quantitative aspects as related to the uncertainty of their results on the light of the main points of measurement theory.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to provide basics of analog electronics and analog to digital conversion systems. Basics of electronic circuit design, analysis, simulartion and experimental characterization.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Foundamental principles to understand the operation of the main devices and circuits of biomedical instrumentation and ways of performing measurements on the signals they detect.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge on calculus, physics, system theory, and circuit theory

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures in classroom and excercises as homework

Students who hold valid certificates relating to Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the school’s disability liaison officer at the start of the course to agree on any teaching arrangements which, whilst respecting the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles.

The contact details for the university’s disability liaison officer are available at the following link: https://unige.it/commissioni/comitatoperlinclusionedeglistudenticondisabilita.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Basic analog electronics, with special focus on  networks adopting operational circuits in linear and non linear mode, and fundamental termo-fluid dynamics, with special focus on fluidic circuits for body perfusion. Measurement methods. Sensors and transducers. Signal conditioning. Analog to digital and digital to analog conversion.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Textbooks and teaching materials indicated during the lectures and made available on Aulaweb.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Two partial written test during the teaching period or final written complete exam in both instances followed by oral examination. Reaching a sufficient level of evaluation on the written part (both for the two partial test and for the complete written exam) is a necessary condition to access oral examination. In case of negative outcome of the oral examination or of retirement from the student, the complete written part has to be done again.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student should exhibit his capacity to solve simple problems related to biomedical instrumentation by making use of his reasoning skills based on the acquired competences.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) may request accommodations for exams at least 7 days prior to the exam date by filling out the “accommodation request form” (available via online services at https://modulionline.unige.it/richiesta-adattamenti# no-back), which will be automatically forwarded by the system to the instructor in charge of the course and to the faculty liaison for students with disabilities and SLDs in their School/Department.

The student will receive a copy of their request.
