OVERVIEW

This is a practical course where students will approach different aspects of the design and characterization of simple circuits and devices for the acquisition and elaboration of signals from different types of sensors, with a focus on bomedical instrumentation

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquiring fundamental operational knowledge regarding the use of measurement instrumentation and the characterization of simple circuits and devices.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students will know how:

  • to use basic bench instruemntation for test and measuremt
  • to know different modalities for interfacing with sensors
  • to write simple microcontroller code to record and process signals coming from different tyoes of sensors
  • to report an experimental measuremtn session and its results

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of electronics and circuit theory, informatics and C language

TEACHING METHODS

Practical experiemntal work in the lab divided into five "lab projects". Few lectures in the classroom to introduce the topic of each lab project.

Students who hold valid certificates relating to Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the school’s disability liaison officer at the start of the course to agree on any teaching arrangements which, whilst respecting the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles.

The contact details for the university’s disability liaison officer are available at the following link: https://unige.it/commissioni/comitatoperlinclusionedeglistudenticondisabilita.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Five "lab projects" regarding the following topics:

  • use of basic electronic measurement instruemntation
  • the use of microcontrolers in intrumentation
  • how to interface analog and digital sensors with linear and non linear response
  • sensor characterization
  • measurement uncertainity evaluation
  • characterization of noise in the measurement chain and its reduction using analog or digital filters
  • "real time" processing of biomedical signals (e.g. photopletismograhpy sifgnal)

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Lecture notes will be made avaiable

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consist in the evalaution of submitted reports for each "lab project" and a final oral discussion.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The aim of the exam will be to assess if the learning objectives have been reached.

It will also be evaluated the clarity of the reports and the capacity to critically discuss the work done and to propose orginal solutions to the problems encountered

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) may request accommodations for exams at least 7 days prior to the exam date by filling out the “accommodation request form” (available via online services at https://modulionline.unige.it/richiesta-adattamenti# no-back), which will be automatically forwarded by the system to the instructor in charge of the course and to the faculty liaison for students with disabilities and SLDs in their School/Department.

The student will receive a copy of their request.
