OVERVIEW

Sanskrit is one of the most important cultural languages in history and the major one to define the Indo-European family. First attested in the second millennium BC, it has survived to the present day thanks to its evolution, which is comparable to that of the Romance languages in relation to Latin. The Neo-Indo-Aryan varieties are spoken throughout most of India, particularly in the central and northern regions. Sanskrit is studied in all the world’s major universities, in philosophical circles, in yoga, and by scholars and enthusiasts. It encompasses every cultural genre: religious, scientific, medical, epic, poetic, philosophical, theatrical, artistic, political and legal texts. As a superstrate language, it has provided the intellectual lexicon for some two billion speakers in South-East Asia.
