OVERVIEW

L’argumentation dans le discours publique et institutionnel : la transmission des concepts scientifiques​

The course is in line with the learning outcomes of the LM38, in particular with regard to the acquisition of textual analysis skills applied to political and institutional communication in French.

The course has a value of 9 CFU for the LM38, including the lettorato and theory module.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the students will have acquired deep knowledge and expertise in the field of French discourse analysis, both in terms of meta-linguistic analysis tools and thematic aspects, including institutional and political discourses.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

- analyze the dynamics of institutional and political texts using the tools of French-style discourse analysis (ADF);
- identify the tools of argumentation in public and institutional discourse, including from the perspective of intercultural mediation;
- recognize and analyze the rhetorical strategies used to communicate scientific concepts in public and institutional discourse.

 

PREREQUISITES

C1 level of the Common European Framework

 

TEACHING METHODS

Plenary lessons and consolidation activities in small groups projects. 

Non frequentanti students are advised to prepare in depth the texts indicated in the bibliography and the materials that will be made available by the lecturer on the Aulaweb.

Students who have submitted documentation of a disability, specific learning disability (SLD), or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the coordinator, Prof. Sara Dickinson (sara.dickinson@unige.it), and the course instructor at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements that, while adhering to the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles and provide appropriate accommodations.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

This course aims to provide the key tools of discourse analysis (DA) needed to critically analyze the dissemination of scientific concepts in public and institutional discourse. Exemplary case studies (the COVID-19 pandemic, GMOs, climate change, etc.) will be analyzed to examine the rhetorical strategies and framing effects used by public and political decision-makers to inform the general public about scientific developments.

Main topics:

- tools for analyzing political discourse in French;

- strategies for the mediatization of institutional discourse in French;

- rhetorical strategies related to the circulation of scientific concepts (naming, metaphorization);

- corpus analysis tools.

For the theory module, the examination will consist of an oral interview following the preparation of a text analysis dossier. The skills acquired in the field of public and institutional discourse analysis through the analysis of authentic texts and oral expression skills in French will then be taken into account. Evaluation out of thirty.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The theoretical module exam aims to verify the acquisition of theoretical knowledge concerning French speech analysis and the ability to apply this knowledge by the concrete analysis of a corpus.

The lettorato exams are designed to test the acquisition of complex texts comprehension and production skills in French at C1-C2 level.
