AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Classes are set to provide the students with the sociological tools necessary to study and understand: migratory processes, in their theoretical and empirical dimensions; the main theories about migration; the social transformation brought about by these processes in both origin and destination Countries; the integration policies.

PREREQUISITES

General knowledge of sociology is required

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal teaching, classes in attendance.

In order to support and integrate textbooks, the teacher will upload teaching materials on Aulaweb.

Classes are scheduled in the first semester.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Classes will start from the description of the general frame of reference for migratory processes, then they wil deal with the main social actors emerging from such processes. Their political dimension is also considered, along with the main problematic aspects of migration.

In more details, among others, classes will focus on the following issues:

- migrants in the labour market and their transition to indipendent economic activities;

- female migrants and transnational families;

- “second generations”;

- the political dimensions of migration and the integration policies.

Moreover, students attending the course in presence will discuss at the exam one essay, at their own choice, among those contained in the volume edited by the teacher.

Non attending students are required to study the whole volume.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Exams are oral and are held by the Professor, jointly with other colleagues in sociological disciplines.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Exams are oral. Students are expected to answer at least three questions on the topics taught in the course, two from Ambrosini’s textbook and one from the book edited by Massa.
