AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • describe the main sociological paradigms of deviance and criminality;
  • distinguish the different methodologies used in the study of deviant phenomena;
  • critically analyse the social construction of deviance and exclusion;
  • connect theoretical models, social control practices and intervention policies;
  • critically assess the effects of different intervention policies addressing deviance and marginality;
  • interpret empirical cases concerning human and non-human marginality using sociological concepts and tools;
  • develop autonomous learning and research skills in the field of deviance and social control.

TEACHING METHODS

The course combines lectures, discussion of empirical case studies, seminar activities and meetings with professionals working in different fields related to deviance and marginality.

Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.

Working students and students with certified learning disabilities, disabilities or other special educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course in order to discuss appropriate learning arrangements.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course examines the historical development of the main sociological theories of deviance and criminality, from classical approaches to contemporary perspectives. Different explanations of deviance, social order and exclusion will be discussed.

Particular attention will be devoted to research methodologies in the field of deviance and to the relationship between theoretical models and intervention policies. Different strategies through which institutions and professionals interpret and govern deviant phenomena will be analysed, highlighting the connections between sociological paradigms, definitions of social problems and intervention policies.

In the final part of the course, students will engage with professionals working with both human and non-human marginal populations in order to discuss the practical implications of intervention policies and governance practices. Critical and interspecies perspectives will be privileged throughout this discussion.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exercises, the small group activities, the classroom thematic discussions and finally the oral interview will aim at evaluating the learning and the reworking of the contents from the candidates, as well as their critical reasoning skills and their public speaking ability.
