OVERVIEW

The processing and analysis of data make it possible to transform raw data into useful information for identifying and monitoring tourism trends, making strategic decisions, solving problems, and structuring the offer in such a way as to effectively meet the needs of an increasingly variable and demanding tourism demand.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The activity aims to provide some basic tools for understanding the territorial implications of the tourism phenomenon through the analysis of the main databases at the local, national and international levels.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • retrieve tourism data from various national and international organizations;

  • critically analyze and synthesize national and international tourism data, both official and unofficial;

  • argue and describe (in written and oral form) the tourism phenomenon from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will be structured in short theoretical sessions (lectures) aimed at acquiring the necessary knowledge to retrieve, process, and analyze the main data on tourism flows at both national and international levels.

Attending students will have the opportunity to carry out individual and group work, which they will develop and present in class and which will form an integral part of the final examination.

The main topics covered are:

  • National statistical sources on tourism

  • International statistical sources on tourism

  • Collection and processing of primary data

  • Collection and processing of secondary data

  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies

  • Drafting reports on tourism demand and supply

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

During the course, the professor will provide guidance on the texts and materials to be used, differentiating them for attending and non-attending students.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The workshop is mandatory attendance. Students will obtain a pass provided that they attend at least 75% of the sessions, corresponding to 12 out of the total 16 hours of the workshop.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The workshop grants a pass/fail qualification and does not include any specific assessment or examination procedures.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with disabilities, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or Special Educational Needs (SEN) are reminded that, in order to request examination accommodations, they must first submit their certification to the University's Student Inclusion Services for Students with Disabilities and SLDs.

Students with SEN, on the other hand, must send an email to the course instructor, copying both the School Representative for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and SLDs (laura.traverso@unige.it) and the Student Inclusion Office (inclusione.studenti@info.unige.it).

  • the course title;
  • the date of the examination session;
  • the student's surname, first name, and student ID number;
  • the compensatory tools and/or dispensatory measures considered necessary and requested.

For all students, requests for accommodations must be submitted well in advance (at least 7 working days) before the examination date. Requests submitted after this deadline may not be accepted.
