AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the knowledge of biotechnological drugs currently in use. Of some of these, the methods of obtaining and specific applications are presented.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of four lectures, each lasting two hours.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department ( Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it ) before class begins, in order to liaise and arrange the specific learning methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Topics covered by elective course:

1) differences between traditional drug and biotechnological drug.

2) placing on the market of a biotechnological drug.

3) placing on the market of a biosimilar biotechnological drug.

4) biotechnological drugs for autoimmune diseases, hepatitis and multiple sclerosis (interferons).

5) gene therapy: examples of biotechnological drugs.

6) biotechnology drugs. for rare diseases.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of a written test comprising one open-ended question.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The following aspects will be evaluated: (1) knowledge of the topics covered in the course; (2) problem-solving skills; (3) the ability to use appropriate scientific language; and (4) the ability to integrate and connect the different topics covered in this course with those addressed in previous courses.
