AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the laboratory students will be able to:

  • describe the role of major institutions in the social construction of deviance;
  • critically analyse the practices through which deviant and marginal categories are constructed;
  • interpret institutional documents, procedures and discourses as tools of classification and governance;
  • analyse the contribution of law, police, courts and penal institutions to processes of defining, classifying and managing deviance;
  • connect institutional practices with the social construction of public problems;
  • reconstruct the main institutional trajectories through which deviant careers develop.

TEACHING METHODS

The laboratory is based on the guided analysis of case studies, institutional documents and professional materials, combined with collective discussions and seminar activities. Individual or group assignments may be required and will be discussed collectively during subsequent sessions.

Active student participation is an integral part of the learning process.

Working students and students with certified learning disabilities, disabilities or other special educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course in order to discuss appropriate learning arrangements.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The laboratory examines the institutional processes through which individuals and groups are progressively defined, classified and treated as deviant. Through the analysis of empirical cases, documents and professional materials, students will explore the role of law in defining deviant conduct, the classification practices adopted by police forces, judicial processes in the construction of deviance, and the treatment and confinement practices characteristic of penal and other total institutions.

Special attention will be devoted to the institutional trajectories through which deviant careers are constructed and to the processes through which social control apparatuses contribute to the production and governance of marginal populations.

A detailed syllabus will be made available on AulaWeb.
