OVERVIEW

The course is intended to integrate and consolidate the competencies developed during the Bachelor's degree program in the fields of structural, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering design through a multidisciplinary design approach oriented toward professional practice.

The course includes laboratory activities based on real-world case studies, in which students undertake the entire process of conceiving, analyzing, and developing simple civil engineering projects, evaluating their technical, regulatory, economic, environmental, and construction-related aspects.

The course is jointly organized by several researchers and is structured into two disciplinary areas, respectively dedicated to structural-geotechnical design and hydraulic engineering design. This organization promotes an understanding of the interactions among the various project components and fosters the development of an integrated vision of civil engineering.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to develop students’ ability to address the design of simple civil engineering works through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates structural, geotechnical, and hydrological-hydraulic engineering competencies.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand and manage the interactions among the different disciplines involved in the design of a simple civil engineering work;
  • develop design solutions that are consistent from structural, functional, and construction perspectives;
  • apply structural and/or geotechnical modeling and analysis tools to the design of civil engineering structures;
  • design the main structural elements and construction details in compliance with current regulations;
  • undertake the preliminary and detailed design of hydraulic infrastructure works, assessing their construction typology and territorial integration;
  • interpret and use the results of laboratory tests and experiments for the characterization of the hydraulic behavior of specific devices;
  • develop independent judgment and synthesis skills in solving simple design problems;
  • acquire the basic operational and methodological competencies required in the professional practice of civil engineers.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The assessment consists of the presentation and discussion of two design projects, corresponding to the two disciplinary areas of the course:

  1. a project developed within the Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory;
  2. a project developed within the Hydraulic Structures Laboratory.

Each design project will be subject to an individual oral examination, during which students will be required to present and discuss the design solutions adopted, the calculation methodologies employed, the results achieved, and the main assumptions made.

The final grade for the course will be determined as the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the two design projects and their corresponding oral examinations.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment is intended to verify the achievement of the learning objectives through the evaluation of the design projects and the corresponding oral examinations. In particular, the following aspects will be considered:

  • the technical accuracy of the design projects;
  • the ability to integrate both structural-geotechnical and hydrological-hydraulic aspects within the design process;
  • the appropriateness of the proposed solutions with respect to regulatory, construction, economic, and environmental constraints;
  • the ability to critically analyze and justify the design choices adopted;
  • the clarity of presentation and the mastery of the subject matter demonstrated during the oral examinations.
