The course will be taught in English and will make use of innovative teaching methodologies developed in collaboration with the University of Seville. The course carries 3 ECTS credits. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to develop the skills required to recognize, analyse, and manage clinical cases that may arise in both community and hospital pharmacy settings. Through guided discussion of realistic scenarios, students will learn to integrate their pharmacological and pharmaceutical-chemistry knowledge to formulate critical evaluations, identify therapy-related problems, and propose appropriate interventions. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide students with the skills needed to recognize, analyse, and manage clinical cases that may arise in the professional practice of pharmacists, both in community and hospital settings. Through the simulation and guided discussion of realistic clinical scenarios, students will have the opportunity to apply their pharmacological and pharmaceutical-chemistry knowledge in an integrated manner, developing critical and decision-making abilities. The teaching activities, based on innovative methodologies and peer discussion, also include student presentations of independently researched clinical cases, thereby fostering the development of soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Furthermore, the collaboration with the University of Seville will enhance international interaction among students and broaden their educational perspectives. PREREQUISITES No prerequisites are required. TEACHING METHODS The course consists of a total of 24 hours. Part of the teaching hours will be used by instructors from UNIGE and the University of Seville to present different clinical cases, while the remaining hours will be dedicated to student presentations, delivered individually or in groups, in PowerPoint format, following a flipped-classroom approach. Since the course is offered in collaboration with the University of Seville, all activities will take place online. The lectures delivered by the instructors will be asynchronous, allowing all participants from both universities to follow them at their convenience. Student presentations, instead, will be held synchronously, to enable discussion and peer evaluation, thereby strengthening the acquisition of transversal skills. For this reason, attendance is strongly recommended to ensure effective learning of the subject. Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), disabilities, or other educational needs, duly submitted to the University of Genoa (UNIGE), are invited to contact the instructor and the School/Department disability representative (Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it) at the beginning of the course to agree on any teaching arrangements that, while respecting the learning objectives, take individual learning needs into account. IMPORTANT: requests for exam accommodations MUST be submitted at least 10 working days before the scheduled exam date, following carefully the instructions provided at the link: https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The program includes the presentation of specific clinical cases related to: - potential drug–drug interactions - drug–supplement interactions - patient-specific pathological conditions - special situations such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and pediatric age The proposed clinical cases will serve an exemplary and instructional purpose, providing a foundation for students to simulate the presentation of clinical cases themselves, thereby developing analytical skills, clinical reasoning, and professional communication abilities. These presentations will also offer an opportunity for interactive discussion among participants, fostering critical thinking and deeper exploration of the topics addressed. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Specific indications regarding the reference bibliography will be provided by the instructors at the beginning of the course. The exam will be oral, conducted online in synchronous mode, in the presence of the course instructor and the examination committee. The assessment will consist of the presentation and discussion of a clinical case selected by the student. The exam will be held in English. ASSESSMENT METHODS The assessment will take into account the student’s ability to analyse and discuss a clinical case, appropriately integrating the pharmacological and pharmaceutical-chemistry aspects acquired during the degree program. The evaluation will also consider the coherence of the reasoning, the appropriateness of the scientific language used, and the clarity of the presentation.
