Programme overview

Summary

The Master Degree in Medical-pharmaceutical biotechnology provides an advanced scientific preparation on biotechnology topics oriented to medicine and pharmacology through the acquisition of integrated skills at the biochemical, biological-molecular and cellular levels. The course also provides competencies for business creation and management.

Learning by doing

One of the peculiarities of the course is the wide involvement of students in practical laboratory activities. The teaching schedules of both years provide practical exercises and promote attendance in laboratories, where students carry out their thesis internship. Internships can be made in highly qualified university research laboratories, in companies of the biotechnology sector and in Centers of Excellence such as: Ospedale Policlinico San Martino-IRCCS, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) and Istituto Giannina Gaslini.

Career perspectives

A Master graduate ('dottore magistrale') in Biotechnology has high responsibility tasks in different fields such as diagnostic, bioengineering, bio-sanitary and pharmacological. He/she works in health service and in both public and private companies involved in biotechnological research and production of goods and services. His/her duties also concern the development and testing of innovative pharmacological products and of patent in the health field.

Contents

The Master degree in Medical-pharmaceutical biotechnology has the goal of providing students with an advanced knowledge in the medical-pharmaceutical biotechnology field. The course is taught in English, the native language for such a new subject, allowing our students to be able to easily interact with colleagues from all over the world.

Starting from the fundamentals acquired in the Bachelor degree, the Master course addresses the latest and advanced topics and techniques, teaching technologies such as deep sequencing, proteomics, genomics, nanotechnologies, cancer immunology, stem cells for tissue repairing, molecular pathology, developmental neurobiology, organ biochemistry and diagnostic technologies.

Head of programme

Dear Students, the Master degree course in Medical-pharmaceutical biotechnology is designed to provide a quality leap in your education. From your Bachelor course you learnt the basics of a discipline that in the recent years underwent to exponential growth. Now it's time to go in depth. The Course is mainly focused on molecular aspects of oncology, immunology and neuroscience, and is planned to promote a strong interaction between students and excellent laboratories in the University, in the Italian Institute of Technology and in two health care and research institutes: -IRCCS- Policlinico San Martino and Istituto Giannina Gaslini. I hope that the next two years represent for you an exciting experience and an open door towards a rewarding job or a prestigious PhD programme.

Success stories

Federico Tortelli|render|striptags|trim }} }}
I've studied Medical-pharmaceutical biotechnology in UniGe, where I've also earned a Ph.D. in Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Despite the strong personal connection with Genova, I decided to follow on my research activities abroad.

Federico Tortelli
Preclinical Pharmacology Team Leader at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Basel

I followed my academic career in Switzerland as a researcher at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne before obtaining a position as a Preclinical Pharmacology Team Leader at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Basel, where I have been working for four years. I have good memories of UniGe: I had the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of scientific research by following theoretical courses as well as by learning practical experimental activities in the labs, where I was lucky enough to meet special people, both from a professional and a human point of view. During all the course I felt part of a big family, and I will always thank everyone, from the former president of the course Ranieri Cancedda, to the educational manager Enrico Zeraschi and to the whole Regenerative medicine laboratory where I spent most of my studies.
