Overview

The course in brief

Presentation

The course aims to train graduates with a solid background in the various fields of geology and with particular skills in the management and monitoring of geological and environmental risks, in earth dynamics and evolution, and in the research and sustainable use of geo-resources.

The Laurea Magistrale in Geological Sciences in Genoa envisages, for the majority of courses, being delivered both in Italian and possibly in English. This choice stems from the desire to foster connections with the international professional market and to attract foreign students as well.

The courses that can be delivered in English are listed in Art. 3 Educational activities at the link
. https://servizionline.unige.it/unige/stampa_manifesto/RD/2024/9022.pdf

Learning by doing

Frontal teaching is supplemented by laboratory activities and field exercises, carried out individually or in groups and aimed at applying the theoretical knowledge acquired. The course is completed with a professional internship experience in public institutions, companies or private firms and with the Master's Thesis. The thesis is supplemented with internship activities and/or 'stages' in laboratories and Italian and foreign institutions to broaden the student's knowledge and ability to interact with other professional figures.

.

Professional outlets

The graduate finds employment both in private companies, public bodies, research institutions and universities, and as a freelance geologist after enrolment in the relevant register A, carrying out design activities of geological interventions and technical-managerial coordination, territorial planning, at urban and basin scale, study of geo-resources, terrestrial and marine geological monitoring, mitigation of geological and environmental risks, conservation and enhancement of natural and cultural heritage in protected areas and museums, research, scientific dissemination and teaching.

What you will learn

The Master's Degree Course is divided into three curricula, but includes a common part with teaching aimed at broadening and deepening the knowledge and comprehension skills acquired in the Bachelor's Degree Course in the following areas:

applied geophysics

for the exploration of geological structures, georesources and for environmental investigations

geological and geomorphological survey

focused on the study of geo-hydrological hazards, also in relation to ongoing climate change

methodologies for the analysis of minerals, rocks, water and sediments

for research and characterisation of geo-resources and for environmental investigations

structural geology and cartography

acquire the knowledge and tools to investigate, represent and interpret tectonic structures and rock deformations

.

After attending the common courses, students on the Master's Degree Course can choose from three pathways/curricula that reflect the scientific and cultural competences of the Genoa campus and meet the demands of the labour market:

    .
  • Geology and Territory
  • Georresources and Sustainability
  • Marine Environmental Sciences

Contents

The Geological Hazards and Territory curriculum provides skills in the analysis, management and mitigation of geological hazards (environmental, hydrogeological, seismic and volcanic), the identification and solution of geological-technical problems in the design of engineering works and the use of remote sensing analysis techniques.

The Georisources and Sustainability curriculum provides skills in the analysis of complex geological systems and environmental processes, in the management and exploitation of geo-resources and geo-materials in relation to the needs and resources available and for the valorisation of the geological heritage.

The Marine Environmental Sciences curriculum provides skills in the analysis and understanding of geological processes in the marine and coastal environment through geological, geophysical and oceanographic techniques, fostering collaboration with biologists, ecologists and environmental technicians.
