Requisites assessment

As you enrolled in the Course, you will have to take a initial preparation test to assess your knowledge of mathematics and maritime culture.

In addition, if you do not present a language certification of B2 or higher (C1 or C2), you will have to take an English language test of B2 level. The certifications accepted at the University are listed on the dedicated CLAT page. Certifications verified as compliant will allow the B2 level to be recognised.

Students who can certify with a letter issued by the institution that the medium of instruction (MOI) was English will be exempted from the English language test. This document can only be equated with an English language proficiency certificate if all the years of study related to the diploma were conducted in English.

Both tests are not selective nor do they foresee any closed number and will be available in several sessions during the first semester. If you do not reach the minimum score required in the initial preparation test or in the English language proficiency test, you will be given Additional Educational Obligations (OFAs) which you can fulfil within the first semester of your first year.

The test lasts a total of 60 minutes and consists of answering multiple-choice questions in English, broken down as follows:

General and maritime knowledge, Logic and Mathematics (40 minutes)

The questions will focus on general and maritime knowledge. The questions are designed to assess basic knowledge of maritime culture and history, including key figures, products and specific events. The questions are in English.

Assessment of the ability to logically complete a line of reasoning, in a manner consistent with the premises, which are set out in symbolic or verbal form through multiple-choice questions.

For the mathematics section, the questions are designed to assess mastery of:

• number sets and arithmetic (natural, relative, rational and real numbers; ordering and comparing numbers; order of magnitude; operations, powers, radicals, logarithms), algebraic calculation;
• Euclidean geometry (polygons, circumference and circles, measurements of length, area and volume, isometry, similarity and equivalence, loci).
• elements of plane trigonometry (sine, cosine and tangent functions and their inverses, fundamental trigonometric relations, formulas for associated angles, theorems of right-angled triangles).

English language (20 minutes)

The test is designed to assess understanding of the English language. Students who present a language certificate at level B2 or above from those accepted by the University will not be required to sit this part of the assessment.

On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at 4:30 P.M., the Initial Knowledge Assessment will be held online. Students who are unable to attend on that date may take part in a second session, which will also be held online, on Tuesday, 15 December 2026, at 4:30 P.M..

Students who hold a B2-level English language certificate must upload a certified copy of the certificate to the same platform no later than 30 September 2026.

Following the Initial Knowledge Assessment, an English language test will also be held for students who do not hold a B2-level certificate. Registration for the English language test will open on 1 October 2026 for students who have not uploaded a valid certificate by the specified deadline.

Students who obtain a score below 18/30 in either of the two tests will be enrolled with Additional Educational Obligations (Obblighi Formativi Aggiuntivi – OFAs), which must be fulfilled within the first year of the degree programme. The OFAs are considered fulfilled once the student has earned at least 6 CFUs (university credits) by passing one of the first-year examinations in a basic subject.

Students who have not fulfilled their OFAs by the deadline for submitting their second-year study plan will be required to enrol as repeating students.
