Every year UniGe welcomes more than 500 Erasmus+ students from over 350 partner universities.
On this page you will find all useful information on the application procedure for the Erasmus+ Programme and on living and studying at the University of Genoa.

Programme duration

The length of your stay depends on the course you are studying at your home university and the course you choose to take whilst in Genoa.

The duration ranges from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months, depending on the inter-institutional agreement signed between your home university and UniGe.

Admission Criteria

All Erasmus+ students must be nominated by their home university under a valid Erasmus+ agreement.
Students may only be accepted for the ISCED codes/fields included in the aforementioned inter-institutional agreement.

IMPORTANT FOR NON-EU STUDENTS:
Under Italian immigration law, in order to enrol and undertake an Erasmus exchange at the University of Genoa, all incoming students who are non-EU citizens must hold a type D visa for study purposes.

Only students already holding a residence permit issued by an EU country exclusively for study purposes are exempt. The permit must cover the entire duration of the exchange and must be in card format; renewal documents or paper permits are not accepted.

All students, including refugees, are strongly advised to contact their home university and/or the relevant Italian consulate in advance to obtain information on the mandatory procedures.

Healthcare

EU citizens must carry their European Health Insurance Card issued in their country of residence.

Upon arrival

Registration procedure

Upon arrival in Genoa, you must send the following documents to sportellomobstud@unige.it:

a valid identity document
a visa, for non-EU citizens
travel tickets proving your arrival in Genoa (train, flight, motorway receipt, bus)

You will be assigned a registration number and login details to access UniGe’s online services and officially begin your mobility programme.

Applying for an Italian residence permit (only for non-EU students, if required)

The University of Genoa’s Cerco Alloggio service offers furnished flats in the city centre, close to the university campuses, for students living away from home, Erasmus students, international students and the wider university community.

Student activities

The GEG (Erasmus Group Genoa) is a non-profit student association, part of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). Its aim is to promote student mobility through university exchange programmes, based on the principle of ‘students helping students’.
GEG is run by volunteers and organises numerous activities to welcome international students to Genoa.
GEG also organises a pick-up service on request.

Italian language courses

UniGe organises, with the support of the EU, Italian language courses for international students, completely free of charge.
The courses are divided into levels, in accordance with the criteria established by the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
You can enrol directly on one of these courses by completing the relevant section of the application form.

Extend your Erasmus+

If you wish to extend the duration of your Erasmus placement, you will need to obtain authorisation from both your home institution and the lecturer responsible for the exchange at UniGe.
The request for extension must be sent to the International Mobility Office at least 15 days before the end of the registered Erasmus period.
Once both authorisations have been received, the Office will issue a confirmation of acceptance.
