The goal of the course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge of the different types of composite materials. The description of the main technologies used to produce short and long fibers reinforced composites follows. The tests and the controls used to characterize the composites are described. The course is completed with the description of the joining techniques.
Lectures and laboratory
First of all, mechanical and thermal characteristics of CMC, MMC and PMC are described, referring to the standards. The description of the technologies used to produce composites with different kinds of matrixes and/or different types/geometries of reinforces follows. The course continues analyzing the main nondestructive controls used to verify the quality of a composite. The bonding techniques to realize structural joints are described.
