AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the students with a deep knowledge on mechanical properties of plastic materials, analyzing the specific field of application. The main manufacturing technologies and joining processes of polymeric materials are analyzed. The course is completed with the description of the rapid prototyping techniques.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

After an introduction to the classification of tecnopolymers (thermoplastics and thermosets), the characteristics of the main families are analyzed: polyolephine, polyvinyl resins, styrenic resins, acrylic polymers, phenolic resins, polyamides, polycarbonate, polyesters and epoxy resins.

The description of standardized tests, used to define plastic materials characteristics follows.

The description of the main technological processes (extrusion, injection moulding, etc.) and joining techniques (welding and bonding) are also dealt with.

Finally, some rapid prototyping and rapid tooling technologies are described.
