OVERVIEW

TEXT LINGUISTICS AND PRAGMATICS

The course is a 9-credits-course  consisting  of

- a theoretical module of 30 hours (held in the 2nd semester) in which basic concepts of text lingustics are presented and illustrated;

- an applied module of 60 hours dedicated to deepening and expanding oral and written competence in the German language;

- an applied module of 40 hours aiming to provide students with basic skills of German-Italian translation;

- an applied module of 36 hours focusing on German Languages for Special Purposes.

- to be able to analyze German texts of different typologies using methods of linguistic text analysis

- to be informed about linguistic skills apt to produce textual coherence and cohesion

- to have the competence to distinguish and describe various text typologies

- to be able to apply theoretical knowledge in text linguistics for translation from and into the mother language

- to have command of the main theories of linguistic pragmatics and speech act theory

- to be competent in analyzing statements in German language according to pragmalinguistic criteria

- to be familiar with the methods of conversation analysis

- to achieve knowledge in contrastive and intercultural pragmatics

- Fähigkeit, unterschiedliche Texte in deutscher Sprache mit textlinguistischen Methoden zu analisieren

- Kenntnis der sprachliche Mittel der Herstellung von Textkohärenz und -kohäsion

- Fähigkeit, unterschiedliche Textsorten zu unterscheiden und zu beschreiben

- Anwendung textlinguistischer Kenntnisse in der interlingualen Übersetzung

- Beherrschung der Haupttheorien der  linguistischen Pragmatik und der Sprechakttheorie

- Fähigkeit Äußerungen in deutscher Sprache nach pragmalinguistischen Kriterien zu analysieren

- Vertrautheit mit den Methoden der Gesprächsanalyse

- Kenntnisse der kontrastiven und interkulturellen Pragmatik

TEACHING METHODS

Lecture with language exercises

The theory lectures (30 lessons) will be accompanied by yearlong practical exercises in language, grammar and translation from Italian to German (see programs published in Aulaweb and on the websites of the single instructors that will be announced in October 2017).

Lessons will be held in German language.

Vorlesung mit begleitenden Sprachübungen (Lektorat)

Die theoretischen Lektionen (30 Stunden) werden von ganzjährigen praktischen Übungen zur Sprache, Grammatik und Übersetzung Italienisch-Deutsch flankiert  (s. Programme in der Aulaweb und auf den Webseiten der einzelnen Dozenten, die im Oktober 2017 bekannt gegeben werden).

Die Unterrichtseinheiten werden in deutscher Sprache durchgeführt.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

In the theory class students will familiarize with text linguistics and pragmatics of German language. Subject of the module will be different issues of text analysis as for example text coherence and text cohesion as well as different types of deixis, anaphoric and cataphoric relations in German texts and text typologies. During the class will be focused on the usefulness of text linguistics, insofar relevant for translation practice. The second principal topic of the theoretical module is linguistic pragmatics, especially will be addressed arguments such as direct and indirect speech acts, cooperative principles, conversational implicatures and methods of conversation analysis. Moreover relevant issues of contrastive and intercultural pragmatics will be considered. The theoretical module is meant to familiarize students with the above mentioned linguistic themes in order to provide them with basic knowledge for a better comprehension of written and oral texts as well as of various varieties of the German present-day language.

The program of the course is valid until February 2018 in accordance to the departmental regulation.

Im Theoriemodul sollen die Studenten mit der Textlinguistik und Pragmatik der deutschen Sprache vertraut gemacht werden. Behandelt werden unterschiedliche Bereiche der Textlinguistik wie etwa die Textkohärenz, Textkohäsion, Formen der Deixis und der Phorik in deutschen Texten sowie diverse Textsorten und -typen. Dabei wird jeweils der Nutzen der Textlinguistik für die interlinguale Übersetzung in den Vordergrund gestellt. Zweites Hauptthema des Theoriemoduls ist die linguistische Pragmatik, im Besonderen werden Themen wie die direkten und indirekten Sprechakte, die Konversationsmaximen, die konversationalen Implikaturen und die Methoden der Gesprächsanalyse präsentiert und diskutiert. Berücksichtigt werden ferner auch Hauptaspekte der kontrastiven und interkulturellen Pragmatik. Durch das Theoriemodul sollen die Studenten mit den oben aufgelisteten linguistischen Thematiken vertraut werden, um ihnen die theoretischen Grundlagen für ein besseres Verständnis von schriftlichen und mündlichen Textsorten an die Hand zu geben, wobei auch soziolinguistische Varietäten berücksichtigt werden.

Das Programm ist gemäß der Studienordnung bis Februar 2018 gültig.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The theory lessons will be concluded by an oral exam in which the arguments treated during the class will be asked about. The translation exercises will be completed by written exams and the interpreting lessons by an oral exam. During the oral exam at the end of the theory class the students have to bring forward an argument by their own choice and to provide evidence of their profound knowledge of the arguments dealt with during the lessons, of the designed texts and of the materials published in Aulaweb. Part of the exam evaluation consists in the capability to express scientific arguments adequately in German language.

In der mündlichen Prüfung nach Abschluss des Theoriemoduls und an den darauf folgenden Prüfungsdaten werden die während des Kurses behandelten Themen geprüft. Die Übersetzungsübungen schließen mit schriftlichen Prüfungen ab und der Dolmetschunterricht mit einer mündlichen Prüfung. Während der mündlichen Prüfung nach Abschluss des Theoriemoduls soll die Kandidatin/der Kandidat ein selbst gewähltes Thema präsentieren und anschließend auf Fragen zu den während des Semesters behandelten Themen antworten. Darüber hinaus werden in der Abschlussprüfung auch Kenntnisse der angegebenen Lektüren und der in der Aulaweb zur Verfügung gestellten Materialien abgeprüft. In die Abschlussnote fließt auch die Bewertung der Fähigkeit ein, die Prüfungsinhalte angemessen in deutscher Sprache darzustellen.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Language level B1 in German language is required for participation.

The exam is obligatory for students in the third year of the course of studies in Theories and techniques of language mediation.

Die Prüfung ist obligatorisch für die Studenten des 3. Jahres des Studienganges "Moderne Sprachen und Kulturen" (Lingue e Culture moderne).

Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am Kurs ist das Niveau B1 (GERS) in der deutschen Sprache.
