By contrast with other courses in the same scientific-disciplinary field, the History of the Greek language course studies the development of Greek, that is in a diachronic phase. For the History of the Greek language course there is no hiatus between the spoken Greek of ancient times and that of today: speaking of a “dead” Greek and a “living” Neo-Greek is erroneous. To take this course, students must know the Greek alphabet and take the option of ancient Greek or Neo-Greek.
The course aims to give students fundamental knowledge of the History of the Greek language and considers the entire chronological arc from ancient Greek to modern Greek. The course is taught in two modules: History of ancient Greek and History of Neo-Greek languages to be chosen by students. Please note that History of Greek textbooks normally cover the period from ancient times to today.
