OVERVIEW

The course includes an institutional part, which will reconstruct the themes of the history of semiotics, social sciences and contemporary linguistic-anthropological thought merged into interpretive semiotics, leading to dissenting semiotics towards the commoditization society, and a monographic part aimed at distinguishing the operational procedures of interpretation and decryption through the sample cases of the decipherment of unknown scripts and of Phaestus Disk.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at providing a specific overview on the concepts and theoretical principles developed by different schools of semiotics on the function of language and other expressive systems in the structure of human knowledge. These principles will be applied in texts such as social processes, most advanced and innovative cultural phenomena and debates of contemporary reality such as food sovereignty, the objection to the consumption, the de-growth theory and theatre anthropology. The aim is to foster students' independence of thought in relation to clichés of current mass culture.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

a. The first aim of the course (9 credits) is to provide historical and theoretical keys to the main concepts developed by the different schools of semiotics on the function of language in the formation and organization of human knowledge.

b. The second aim of the course (9 credits) is to develop independent judgment, independence of thought and personal critical vision in the adoption of theoretical principles, operational tools and criteria for the interpretation of phenomena (facts, objects, processes) of contemporary reality (such as the food sovereignty, the consumer objection, the theory of degrowth, theatrical anthropology) and of hermeneutic character (such as the distinction between the process of interpretation and the process of deciphering, and the question about the nature of "writing), knowing adopt an adequate historical-cultural perspective that culturally contextualizes the phenomena examined and the instruments used by the analyst, avoiding common places widespread in the current mass culture and learning how to organize a clear, coherent and structured discourse free of jargon.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

- examine the concepts developed in various semiotic theories and schools on the function of language and on the organization of human knowledge

- analyze and distinguish the fundamental thematic nuclei of contemporary social and cultural phenomena examined in the course

- analyze and distinguish the technical and operational procedures of the processes of "interpretation" and "decryption"

- evaluate the different writing theories and compare their adherence to different forms of writing

- to address the specific issues and cases examined to general and wider issues

- develop conceptual connections between particular cases and general issues

- to link different texts thematically

- critically identify current commonplaces and possibly separate them

- create and formulate original theses starting from the cases, themes and problems examined

- synthesize and expose, with a clear, organized and free speech, the evolutionary stages of the history of semiotics and the basic principles of semiotics

- critically compare different assumptions, theses and theories in the planned texts on the notions of "development", "growth (economic)" and "well-being"

- explain your choice of text in the chosen groups of texts

- describe and discuss in detail the contents of the texts brought to the examination, in particular the compulsory ones that are not chosen


As for the 6 credits exam program, the direct reading of the classical texts of contemporary thought (see "Program" and "Exam texts - Bibliography"), this list of expected learning objectives will be limited to:

- analyze and distinguish the fundamental thematic nuclei of contemporary social and cultural phenomena examined in the course

a. Le premier objectif du cours (9 crédits) est de fournir des clés historiques et théoriques aux principaux concepts développés par les différentes écoles de sémiotique sur la fonction du langage dans la formation et l'organisation du savoir humain.

b. Le deuxième objectif du cours (9 crédits) est de développer le jugement indépendant, l'indépendance de pensée et la vision critique personnelle dans l'adoption de principes théoriques, outils opérationnels et critères pour l'interprétation des phénomènes (faits, objets, processus) de la réalité contemporaine (tels que la souveraineté alimentaire, l'objection du consommateur, la théorie de la décroissance, l'anthropologie théâtrale) et le caractère herméneutique (comme la distinction entre le processus d'interprétation et le processus de déchiffrement, et la question de la nature de l'écriture) pour adopter une perspective historico-culturelle adéquate qui contextualise culturellement les phénomènes examinés et les instruments utilisés par l'analyste, en évitant les lieux communs largement répandus dans la culture de masse actuelle et en apprenant à organiser un discours clair, cohérent et structuré, sans jargon.

À la fin du cours, l'étudiant sera capable de:

- examiner les concepts développés dans diverses théories et écoles sémiotiques sur la fonction du langage et sur l'organisation du savoir humain

Title:

Interpretation and decryption: dissenting economies, the enigma of writing, the Disco di Festo.


Course program.

The institutional part of the course will focus on the reconstruction of the themes of the history of semiotics, social sciences and contemporary linguistic-anthropological and philosophical thought merged into interpretive semiotics, up to the formation of contemporary semiotics that examines identity and characteristic features of dissenting thought forms to the clichés and stereotypes settled in contemporary cultural systems, in common current thought, and in socially widespread ideologies. This configuration will result from the analysis of organisms that practice forms of dissenting economy within the paradigm of "demercification" (or "objection to the market"), which will be examined themes and characteristics (NGOs operating in international cooperation, theory of degrowth, anti-consumer social movements). The monographic section of the course will examine the different theoretical and operational procedures of the semiotic processes of "interpretation" and "deciphering", focusing on the sample cases par excellence of the investigative process of deciphering unknown languages ​​and scripts, including the exemplary case of "Disco" di Festo ", on the issues raised by the notion of" writing ", and on enigmatic, authentic or artificial writings.

Programme du cours.

La partie institutionnelle du cours se concentrera sur la reconstruction des thèmes historiques de la sémiologie, les sciences sociales et de la pensée contemporaine anthropologique et philosophique linguistique ont convergé dans la sémiologie d'interprétation, jusqu'à la formation de sémiologie contemporains examine les caractéristiques d'identité et caractéristiques des formes de dissidence pensée en ce qui concerne aux clichés et aux stéréotypes établis dans les systèmes culturels contemporains, dans la pensée courante et dans les idéologies socialement répandues. The exam will consist of a part of targeted questions on the institutional section and a part of specific questions on the monographic part of the program to verify the understanding of the issues and underlying issues examined and discussed in the course, in addition to the basic principles of semiotics.

d) Students not attending the course: it requires the addition of 2 texts, to be chosen in any case among the "chosen" texts indicated in the exam program. An interview will be useful to orientate the choice of texts in relation to specific interests.

c) Les étudiants inscrits à d'autres cursus pour lesquels l'examen vaut 6 crédits ne passent pas le 4e point du programme à l'examen; alternativement, ils sont invités à se mettre d'accord sur un programme spécifique en allant à la réception de l'enseignant.

d) Les étudiants qui ne suivent pas le cours: il faut ajouter 2 textes, à choisir dans tous les cas parmi les textes "choisis" indiqués dans le programme d'examen. Une interview sera utile pour orienter le choix des textes par rapport à des intérêts spécifiques.
