OVERVIEW

This course provides the knowledge and the techniques that are required to perform the choice of the hull form and the propeller for a given ship design.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is targeted to the acquisition by the students of the basic principles and the basis for resistance to the motion and to power the hulls .

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is aimed at illustrating the fundamental and basic principles concerning hull resistance and propulsion.

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom lectures and exercises

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Ship resistance components.
Resistance prediction from model testing and standard series.
Two-dimensional and three-dimensional airfoil theory.
Propeller geometry, design and matching.
Theory of propeller action: momentum theory, blade element theory.
Cavitation
Hull-propeller interaction.
Propeller choice: propeller charts, powering prediction.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written examination consists in three open questions.

The answers are evaluated to assess if the knowledge and the techniques illustrated during the lessons and in the lecture notes have been acquired by the student.
