OVERVIEW

The course provides the concepts necessary to study problems related to floatability, equilibrium and stability of a floating body.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Concepts related to floatability, equilibrium and stability of a floating body

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the concepts and tools in order to evaluate the geometrical characteristics of an hull and to solve the problem of equilibrium of weight and buoyancy, considering also equilibrium stability.

The first part of the course deals with the definition of the geometrical elements (hull centres and equations); the second part is devoted to the equilibrium equations and the evaluation of stability; the third part is related to typical applications (weight loading or unloading, weight movements, etc.).

TEACHING METHODS

The course is composed by theoretical lectures and courseworks.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The student will be evaluated by means of a written exam (exercise) and an oral examination on all the course program. There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February), plus some additional exams during year to be agreed with the professor.

The written exam will regard the evaluation of equilibrium and stability of a floating body.

The oral exam will regard  theory and practical cases (usually two questions).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written exam will consist in practical application (exam is passed if the mark is at least 18/30).

The oral exam will consist in the verification of  the level of knowledge gained by the student (theoretical concepts and practical applications). The oral exam moreover will allow to evaluate the communicating skills of the student.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The students have to sign up for the written exam via the online website. The results of the written exam will be published on Aulaweb before the oral examination (usually about one week after the written exam). Only student with a mark of at least 18/30 are admitted to the oral exam.
