OVERVIEW

The course will deal with the issues of meeting and ibridation between cultures,  with particular reference 
to the migrations and the history of South America.

 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at look into the issues of meeting between cultures and cultural ibridation, with particular reference to    the South America. The universalistic and relativistic positions will be examined in order to reflect about transcultural processes,  such as the diffusion of afro-american religions. The course  intends to propose the cultural miscegenation as an ideal mediation between  homogenisation and multicultural fragmentation.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at assess the cultural miscegenation as an ideal mediation between homogenisation and multicultural fragmentation. 
At the end of the course, students will be able to analyse themes related to the meeting between cultures and cultural ibridation, to describe universalistic and relativistic positions, to comments on transcultural processes,  such as the diffusion of afro-american religions, to discuss how and why the cultural miscegenation can be considered a resource enabling  societies  to negotiate  between globalization and multicultural fragmentation.

 

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal classes with use of multimedial devices, driven discussions in court, group activities of cooperative learning, individual exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will present the main currents of Cultural Anthropology's in their historical development – from Evolutionism to Functionalism, from Structuralism to Post-Modernism –, the main theoretical and  methodological approaches adopted by anthropologists, from Universalism to Relativism. The course will also analyse the concept of  miscegenation in History and Social Sciences. Different ethnographic case studies, in particular from Brazilian contexts, will be considered. The whole course  intends to propose the miscegenation as real possibility for the human future.
