History of philosophy introduces the students to the knowing of the most important figures and traditions of the most important figures and traditions of the history of the thought. It is based on the analysis and the commentary of the texts through a critical-philological method.
1) Acquiring a solid, direct knowledge of major classics of the history of philosophy
2) Reading and interpreting the philosophical texts from point of view of the historical reconstruction and of the philosophical discussion of the problems
3) Focusing thorough the conceptual structure and the forms of argumentation of the philosophical texts

3) Being able to focus on the argumentative strategies of different philosophers
4) Acquiring the philosophical terminology, increasing the abilities of abstraction, selecting the argumentative strategies according to the different contexts
A basic knowledge of the history of the Western thought is required to understanding adequately the methodology of the research and the contents of the classes.

HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
Oral exam. The exam is meant to assess students’ grasp of the topics covered by the course and their ability to link topics with the relevant historical and cultural contexts. The exam will also assesse students’use of philosophical terminology in relation to authors and texts and students’ability to build effective arguments.
Particular emphasis will be given to the students ability to manage sources and bibliography in order to obtain the necessary information and to illustrate topics and issues finding connections between them.
The assessment will be based on: knowledge of the subject matter; concept analysis and synthesis; clarity of expression, proper terminology. Students who show proficiency in knowledge and critical perspective, as well as proficiency in expression and technical vocabulary will be granted the highest marks. Students who show they have studied, but in a mnemonic way, and are able of synthesis and analysis expressed adequately, will be granted of medium marks. Students who show basic knowledge, but inadequate vocabulary, will have a pass. Students who show insufficient knowledge, inadequate vocabulary and don't know appropriately the bibliography, will not pass the exam.
