OVERVIEW

Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature studies the authors, the works, the forms and the ways through which the Latin texts of the Middle Ages and Humanism have come down to us. During the course will be presented a profile of the history of Latin Literature from late antiquity to the fifteenth century; a panorama of the different literary genres and themes in their historical-cultural evolution and some issues related to the transmission of texts and philological research will be introduced.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main purpose of the course is to provide students with a global overview of the main literary genres and authors of Latin Literature from the sixth to the fifteenth century, through the reading, analysis and commentary of the most significant texts, with particular attention to the identification of the relations between literary facts and related historical contexts.

The specific objective of the course is to provide students with a global overview of the features of the history of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature. At the end of the course the student must be able to know the history of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature, the authors and their main works; to understand the phases of the historical-cultural evolution of Latin Literature from the 6th to the 15th century; to recognize the different literary genres and their specific characteristics; to use the basic terms of the lexicon of the discipline; to apply the basic concepts of philology to individual texts.

The course includes lectures held by the teacher. During the course, external experts could be invited to hold lessons on specific topics. Regular attendance, active participation to the lessons and individual study will enable students to achieve the set goals.

The course program includes the following topics: presentation of the history of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature from the sixth to the fifteenth century and the main literary genres; analysis of some representative texts of all genres; illustration of the philological methodologies to prepare critical editions.

The course program includes the following topics: presentation of the history of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature from the sixth to the fifteenth century and the main literary genres; analysis of most representative texts of all genres; illustration of the philological methodologies to prepare critical editions; deepening of the historical and cultural context within which the literary phenomena and the relative philological methods of reconstruction of texts have evolved and developed.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam takes place in oral form, through an interview conducted on the topics of the program and through the analysis of the texts examined in class.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During the exam, it will be verified the actual acquisition by the student of what has been learned both on the base of individual study, and through listening to the topics covered during the lessons in the classroom. The evaluation of learning aims to test the knowledge and skills related to the specific field of study. The test therefore evaluates: the knowledge of the history of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature and its historical-cultural evolution from the VIth to the XVth century (up to 10/30); the identification of the different literary genres, their peculiarities, the most significant authors and texts (up to 15/30); the application of the fundamental concepts of philology to individual texts showing the ability to master the specific lexicon of the discipline (up to 5/30).
